"Management will ask all IT leaders to cut their costs. However, the economic slump presents an opportunity to spearhead strategic business intelligence (BI) and performance management (PM) initiatives. Enterprises need intelligent measurement systems to know where costs can be cut with the least impact on growth, risk and quality. Enterprises need to improve their analytical skills to identify leading indicators to better run, grow and transform their business. Leaders of BI and PM initiatives must bolster their enterprises' ability to collect, manage and share information, and make it more dynamic, interactive, transparent and, above all, credible. Moreover, the analytical insights derived from this information must be integrated into the decision-making process throughout the company. Gartner's BI and PM research will analyze these imperatives in 2009 by focusing on 12 key issues organized into four core topics."
